Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed I purchased 2 bowers & wilkins cm9 s2 tower speakers a while ago. I decided to upgrade my receiver and purchased the denon avr x4300 receiver thinking I could use the HEOS 7 speakers with the B&W tower speakers. I first purchased the HEOS 5 speakers to test out this arrangement. I've had a couple of problems. Most of my music is on my Mac desktop running iTunes on a large drive. I group the 2 HEOS 5 speakers with the B&W's. As soon as I try to play music using Airplay through the x4300 the HEOS 5 speakers pull out of the group and I"m left with 2 speakers. The other problem seems to be latency and volume level of the HEOS 5 speakers when I play music from Pandora or Tidal. I haven't worked on this problem in a couple of weeks. But my thoughts now is to use the 2 HEOS 5 speakers in my office and forget about purchasing the HEOS 7's. I plan to research switching to Sonos and purchase their Connect to wire to my Denon x4300. Another problem with my HEOS and Denon x4300 is I was told by Denon tech support mixing the wired speakers with HEOS speakers won't work for surround sound. I was quite surprised at this but I haven't started building the surround sound setup yet. I'm not quite sure about the advice I am getting with Denon support. Another reason for me to research Sonos.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great hardware! Needs more work around software I own 3x5's, 1x7, 1x soundbar/sub, 1 drive, 2x3's, 1xLink Bought the HEOS for it's amazing sound (for a mainstream product) and it's flexibility. Compared Sonos (v1), Bose and Polk and a few others and this sounded way better for a Class-D Amp/Speaker combo. Loved the flexibility of networking (hardwired/wireless) and that it was a little more friendly around standard industry protocols. Liked the idea that they were thinking of the custom home (or smart home or legacy home) that might have in ceiling/wall speakers (Drive) and the amps, soundbar, outdoor (Heos 1 w/go pack). This allows you to have a combo of wired (but hidden for the wife factor) and wireless for new places you can't run wire to or didn't account for in the past. While it already supported a number of High Resolution solutions and Bluetooth through 3rd party usb dongle, the new version introduces even higher resolutions formats AND native bluetooth. While i would have loved Apple protocols like some others have mentioned, it was an easy work around repurposing an existing express i already had lying around. Plug in a chromecast (which was announced then disappeared just as fast) and it supports casting. I know others have dinged them for this lack of support around apple, but personally i wouldn't sacrifice sound quality/fidelity for protocols. I can always find work around's for software, you can't "fix" hardware and sound quality issues. One last thing that's really good; if you have plex or a dlna (even through your PC or MAC or Idevice) and have a lot of FLAC, ALAC and DSD files in addition to MP formats, it's really easy to stream your files. Now, all that said, it does come with a few set backs. Luckily, most of these can be resolved with software updates and app improvements. First off, the number of channels or stations is pretty lacking compared to the market leader (sonos). While there has been a steady stream of updates, they aren't nearly fast enough. Either you build them in natively to the app OR program a punch out methodology like you do for Spotify that can be easily scalable and replicated for other streaming apps that allows a faster go to market approach, especially some of the free ones or the ones people are more vested in (Tidal? Napster? Common!). With the new rollout of your Denon amps, soundbars, etc. it would be nice for you to stop limiting the control of TV grouping to only certain products. While I understand you’re trying to push the “amp” products, there are some applications that only need a pair of the speakers (sound fed into one input plug OR Bluetooth streamed) from the TV, in order to replace our TV’s S*****y speakers. Some even have apple tv and a monitor, so having the ability to adjust the sound delay timing on any speakers (or link/amp) we choose would be ideal. With summer coming around, it would be amazing to group a bunch of Heos1’s in the backyard and have a movie night without the cumbersome amps. Just a mini projector and appletv and away we go. The last major software configuration issue I have is around grouping of the software. It would be amazing to have presets for grouping speakers for preferences. There is one hardware issue I forgot to mention…Denon, you really need to add in a basic remote control for your soundbar (I have the v1 version). While I know there’s the phone or other 3rd party remote controls, if I just want a simple hardware remote, how much does this cost to throw in? Those are the main critical issues I’ve had with the software. The others are really nice to have’s, but the -1 star wasn’t a result of any of these: - With the proliferation of smart home technology, would love to see the heos be integrated with more things (IFTTT, Vera, Smartthings, etc). This would allow for the tech-savvy home owner to do really interesting things like doorbells, alarms, mute on phone ring or doorbell, wake up settings, being able to send in announcements or announce over speakers (in case of unwanted guests). They already have it for Sonos, but I think that’s due to the community and Sonos being a market leader. If you’re going to leap frog and gain market share, this might be an interesting way to push adoption. - Also, it would be good to have permissions for users or logins (or profiles). This way you could have a guest mode, where friends can play DJ, but only on certain speakers without wreaking havoc to the entire system (kids these days are very app savvy)! - In addition to the presets mentioned above it would be amazing if this could be tied to either profiles or some type of persona setting would be great (think Husband, Wife, Kids – guest & party mode, background music mode, night mode, etc). This would really make the whole home streaming system family friendly instead of a 1 to 1 relationship it currently has. - Finally, adding a room correction like Sonos has would be fantastic! Your HT amps already allow for that with the software. Why not have it as an accessory or option (for those of us that already own a mic from a HT amp) to plug it into the audio input and room correct? Still a great start for a company well known for their audio products. Please continue adopting industry standard protocols…last thing anyone needs is a walled garden on more products. Better to stick with the hardware and expertise and leave the other software protocols to specialized companies. I realize there’s a licensing cost, but in the long run, I think I’ll make for happier customers!
